HOW IS MANUEL UGARTE?
Welcome back dear reader,
Manchester United has now signed another player this window, and his name is Manuel Ugarte. United have finished the signing as reported by Fabrizio Romano. Manuel Ugarte was signed for a £50.8 million move from Paris Saint-Germain. That’s a done deal.
Red Devils already had an eventful window(for more check on our post for more signings: Manchester united signings for 2024/2025 transfers ), and bringing in Ugarte seems like a much-needed decision when you take a look at how United's midfield performed was last season.
Now the question is;
Is this transfer of Manuel Ugarte to Manchester united a great ideal and will it contribute much to the club?
Straight to the answer, yes Manuel Urgarte is the right signing for the red devils. Manchester United faced a lot of issues last season, but the midfield was definitely the biggest failure.
How is Manuel Ugarte important signing for Manchester united?
The fact is that Casemiro struggled with injuries, Sofyan Amrabat never quite adjusted to the fast-paced nature of the Premier League, and Mason Mount was sidelined for most of the season due to his own injury. This meant that Bruno Fernandes had to pick up the slack for everyone, which took a toll on his usual attacking flair. The emergence of Kobbie Mainoo was a bright spot, but the young talent alone couldn't solve the persistent lack of energy and dynamism in the midfield.
Therefore Manchester United knew that they needed a solution and set their sights on Manuel Ugarte to solve their lack of defensive strength.
What does Manuel Ugarte bring into United’s squad particularly in this season?
The midfielder loves to chase down the ball and, last season, he made the second most tackles in Europe's top five leagues.
NOTE: In a recent interview, when Ten Hag was asked about Ugarte, he said, "We had three number 10s; we didn't have any more holding midfielders. We had one, so that is the idea behind signing him."
Mainoo needs a partner who can do the dirty work for him so he can play more freely and who to do that job more than Ugarte. Ugarte is the kind of defensive midfielder who takes real pride in his defensive game. He's got the athleticism to back it up, can be lightning-fast in a foot race, and brings serious intensity when he's going in for tackles or intercepting passes. He shines in a double pivot setup and by this I mean he is the backbone of the team, especially alongside a more progressive passer, where he can spur opportunities to win back possession and pounce on them.
There is definitely a debate about whether his skills are better suited to a more defensive, lower possession setup rather than a possession-heavy system. But to my opinion I think Manuel will fit in either of the two.
Another good reason for Manchester United getting him; is his impeccable fitness record, which is a big positive, especially for a team like United that's been hit hard by long-term fitness issues.
Ten Hag will definitely appreciate having a player who can stay fit and available. Plus, Ugarte brings the kind of stamina and energy that United's midfield needs. Ugarte’s ability to cover ground all game long would be a much-needed boost to United's engine room this transfer window.
These are the reasons that make me think that Ugarte could prove to be a great addition to the United squad. But will this is Premier league and anything can happen like I like to call it the change of league effect? Guess we'll have to wait and see.
